Vision Forum is hosting a writing competition that ends December 31st. (Details can be found here) At the encouragement of one of my writer friends, I'm composing a story to submit. I am excited. This will be (if I successfully finish the story) only the first time I've submitted a story to someone beyond my circle of friends.
Writing for Vision Forum has a couple of issues associated with it. The first is word limit. I have to write a complete story surrounding the image they have on their front cover (also available on website) in 100 - 1200 words. That's a maximum of about five pages. For one of my classes, I struggle to reach five pages. For this, I struggle to cut the story back to five pages. This is a good exercise in brevity, and narrowing a topic down until I get across only what I need in order for the story to succeed.
The other issue is the nature of Vision Forum itself. Normally, I would not support this fundamentalist organization. Is sending a story and (potentially) taking money from them supporting them? I asked my father for advice, and he said "Go ahead, take their money. Put it to better use!" That made me feel better. Also, one of my close writer friends (who encouraged me to do this in the first place) is participating. That made me feel better about the process, for I did want to enter this competition, and see what I come up with.
So where am I so far in the writing process? 1,023 words, at the main climax (more or less). I still have to write the main conflict resolution, and get the characters to the place where the Vision Forum picture takes place. We'll see what happens once schoolwork gets out of the way. :-)
